Lake Doxa is an artificial lake at an altitude of 900 meters, which is located in the area of Feneos, Corinth, at the foot of mount Pentelia (Durduvanas) and Aroania (Helmos), the outflows of which form the lake. It is located near the settlements of Ancient Feneos and Panorama and is the result of the construction of the dam that was completed in the late 1990s. There are 3 routes to reach Lake Doxa and they are all very impressive. One is from the national road Corinth – Patras coming out at the exit of Kiato, the second from Derveni, and the third from Xylokastro.
Lake Doxa took its name from the small river of the same name that started in the area and ended near Mount Saita, south of the Feneos plateau. In ancient times it was called Aroanios and is also referred to as Anias.
In the center of the lake dominates the church of Agios Fanourios, also known as the old monastery, which was maintained thereafter the transfer of the Monastery of Agios Georgios, towards the end of the 17th century, to a higher point.
The perimeter of the lake reaches 3.8 km and the alternations in the landscape with the rocks, the wet meadows, and the reeds, make it unique. The area has been declared a NATURA area as it is rich in flora and fauna with rare species.
More specifically, a dense forest of Kefalonian spruce and black pines grows in the lake, which in many places is united with mixed forests of oaks, chestnuts, elms, logs, etc. In some parts of the coast, small meadows are created and large fluffy oaks, plane trees, willows, poplars, and maples rise, while small reeds grow around the lake.
Despite the high altitude, the avifauna of the area is rich and consists of many aquatic and coastal birds, such as gray egrets, white egrets, scuba divers, swans, green-headed ducks, etc. The predators that fly in the surrounding mountains and near the lake consist of golden eagles, hawks, peregrines, owls, etc. On the shores of the lake, we find Kingfishers, Cinderellas, and Yellowbirds. Small birds, such as hedgehogs, shrubs, partridges, nightingales, blackbirds, melodotsirovaks, forest rangers, tree trunks, woodpeckers, ash flycatchers, etc. find shelter in the trees of the area.
The amphibian fauna includes alpine newts, salamanders, toads, green toads, tree frogs, Balkan frogs, and gray frogs. The reptile fauna of the lake is also rich as it consists of Mediterranean turtles, curling turtles, Kefalonian coyotes, blinds, Greek lizards, tranosaurs, and wall lizards, Peloponnese lizards, crowned bears, laurel, sapwoods, nest, oak. The mammals that surround the area are foxes, weasels, ferrets, badgers, wild boars, hares, hedgehogs, moles, and many bats, while recently jackals and roe deer have returned to the surrounding area.
The limestone Pelasgus (Pelasgus stymphalicus) lives in the waters of the lake, while they have been enriched with carp (Cyprinus carpio). The bottom of the lake consists mainly of crayfish of the species Astacus fluviatilis and crabs of the Peloponnese (Potamon Pelops).

Lake Doxa is an ideal destination for day trips and holidays as there are many activities to do, such as horseback riding, cycling, swimming in the lake, etc. You can visit the local taverns to try the local recipes from fresh produce.

The Vouraikos gorge is located 13 kilometers northeast of Kalavrita in Achaia. It has a length of 20 kilometers and flows from the Vouraikos river from which it got its name.
The great interest in the Vouraikos gorge is the flora of the area since many rare endemic species have been recorded and are of special scientific value. Some of them are bellflowers of the rocks (Campanula rupestris), the wild cob (Stachys parolinii), the aurinia of Moria (Aurinia moreana), etc. The fauna of the area consists mainly of birds such as Golden Eagles, waterfowl, Petretes, and other birds that find refuge in the steep forested mountain masses that surround the gorge while in the remarkable foliage that can be found in the otter “Lutra Lutra”
The hike, to cross the gorge, takes 6 to 7 hours – depending on the physical condition of the hiker – while on the way you can encounter imposing slopes, rushing waterfalls, impressive caves, and rich alternating vegetation that compose a unique natural landscape. The hiking trail runs parallel to the railway line of the famous Cog Railway that connects Kalavrita with Diakofto and began construction in 1889, while it was inaugurated in 1896. The Cog Railway construction is due to the large slope of the route. Hikers have the opportunity to take the Cog Railway to the starting point of the hike and can enjoy its wonderful route.
The valley of Vouraikos was a lake that over time, waters found an outlet to the sea and from the friction formed this majestic gorge.
According to Greek mythology, the gorge took its name from Voura. Voura was the daughter of Eliki and Ionas whom Hercules loved. Legend has it that Hercules opened the gorge with his sword, cutting the rock in two so that he could reach the sea and meet Voura.
If you visit the gorge of Vouraikos do not miss to see up close ¨Moutzouri¨, the old locomotive that appears in the old railway station of Diakoptos square.

The waterfalls are formed by the dozens of streams of Mount Paiko that run together, ending at Lake Skra also known as the “Blue Lake”. It owes its color to the fossilized organisms that are at the bottom, while at the point where the waterfalls are located, the limestone dominates and the stream over the years has sculpted the stone, forming a wonderful landscape.
The area is particularly dense in vegetation consisting of plane trees, alders, beeches, oaks, walnuts, chestnuts, hazelnuts, etc. Ivy, laurel, boxwood, climacteric, bearberry grow among many flowers from which stand out Digitalis Grandiflora, Campanula Versicolor, Aristolochia rotunda, Pulmonaria rubra, Coronilla varia, Geranium robertianum, and rubra C, longifolia, Epipactis helleborine, Limodorum Abortivum, and many more.
From the predators stand out the wasps, the hawks, the hawks, the houchouristes, and the owls. The most characteristic birds that feed on microorganisms near the water are the waterfowl, the yellow squirrels, and the ash squirrels, while in the dense vegetation they find the protection, tree trunks, nightingales, red chewing gums, chewing gums, gnats, cockroaches, snails perforated fences, red necks, black hats, etc.
The reptile fauna of the area consists of salamanders, toads, yellow foxes, gray frogs, tree frogs, Balkan frogs, Mediterranean turtles, cognacs, green lizards, gnats, water snakes, shuttles, and vipers. Wolves, jackals, and roe deer live on the hills around the area. Near the Kotza-Dere stream, there are otters, while the fauna is supplemented by foxes, wild boars, badgers, ferrets, weasels, hares, hedgehogs, woodpeckers, and various bats.
There is open parking for the car and you continue on foot for about 300 meters, through a stone path with wide stairs and the beautiful wooden bridge to find the waterfalls of Skra.

The gorge of Samaria is one of the most important sights of Crete, which is visited by thousands of tourists every year to cross the 15.9 km route that starts from Omalos and ends in Agia Roumeli. It is located in the southern part of the prefecture of Chania while most of it belongs to the municipality of Sfakion. In 1962 it was designated a National Park and functions as a shelter for the endangered Cretan Goat also known as kri-kri. In 1981 it joined the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve Network, to promote and protect valuable sites for humans and the rest of the biosphere.
The Samaria Gorge is the second-largest gorge in Europe in length, after the Verdon Gorge in France, and essentially separates the main body of the White Mountains, from their mountain to the west to the top of Volakias. There are two natural entrances to the gorge. The main entrance to the Gorge has located 42 km from Chania, on the Omalos plateau, and at an altitude of 1,227 meters and you call it Xyloskalo. At the entrance, there is an outpost where guests pay for a ticket.
All the way we meet built fountains with drinking water and toilets. The trail is a bit steep at first but is wide and distinct. Along the way, some cypresses and pines offer their shade but also old buildings. With a little luck, you can see the ibex that live in the gorge.
There are a total of seven churches around and the house where the Greek Government stayed in May 1941 with Prime Minister Emmanuel Tsouderos and the King of Greece, George II, before moving to Cairo. From the village of Samaria and after the path you become gentler and with less vegetation. On our way, there is a small river and we will have to cross the wooden bridges. Below we meet the famous Gates (Portes), a narrow passage between two high imposing vertical rocks, to reach the Old Agia Roumeli. The settlement of Old Agia Roumeli was abandoned after catastrophic floods and was transferred to the exit of the Gorge that you now call Agia Roumeli
If one wants to see the gorge of Samaria without crossing it, one can walk from Agia Roumeli to Portes to get a picture of the majesty of nature. In any case, we suggest the long route, which will surely compensate you with unique experiences.

The cave of Melissani is located in Karavomylos, 2 km northwest of Sami, and is one of the most famous sights of Cephalonia, both for its beauty and for its history. It was discovered by Giannis Petrochilos in 1951 and has two entrances. One is the natural vertical entrance of the cave and was created by the fall of a large part of the roof. The second is the artificial entrance with stairs that allows the visit to the cave.

The lake is located 20 meters below the ground, with a length of about 160 m and the water has a depth of 10 m to 40 meters depending on the prevailing conditions. The tour of the cave of Melissani is done by boat and starts from the uncovered part of the cave, where the light falls into the water and creates beautiful turquoise shades that enchant my visitors. Continuing in the covered part of the cave, visitors can see the 20,000-year-old stalactites with strange shapes that adorn most of it.

The Cave of Melissani is associated with two myths. A legend wants Melissanthi to commit suicide in the lake out of grief because Pan did not respond to her love. Another legend wants the shepherdess Melissanthi, who lost a sheep and as she was trying to find it, she stumbled and fell into the lake. In the center of the lake is an island, where archaeologist S. Marinatos discovered findings that certify the worship of the cave to the god Pan and the Nymphs. That is why you call it the Cave of the Nymphs. These finds are a clay figurine of the god Pan, a clay disk depicting nymphs dancing, a clay plate with a procession of nymphs, and a small tile with a relief female figure. The findings are today in the Archaeological Museum of Argostoli.

In this lagoon cave, we meet another rare phenomenon. The water that penetrates the limestone rocks, erodes them and creates pits through a process called karstification. In 1963 it was found that the lagoon cave communicates with the entire karst network of the island and was even confirmed by control with colored water that flowed from the sinkholes in Argostoli, at the other end of the island.

The cave is open to visitors, May to October from 08.30 in the morning until 19.40 in the afternoon every day.

Dragonlake of Tymfi and Dragonlake of Smolikas is one of the most famous lakes of Epirus and is connected by a beautiful legend. The term Dragonlake refers to the alpine lakes that are formed mainly in the mountains of Epirus. Created during the last glacial period.

Dragonlake of Tymfi is located in an alpine meadow of mountain Tymfi, at an altitude of 2,050m. , its shape is elliptical and its area is estimated at 8 acres. It is a popular destination for climbers and hikers, while it is known for its alpine newts, a protected amphibian that looks like a salamander and the locals call it Little dragons and which is hosted in the waters of the lake. It is a 1-hour walk from the shelter in the col of Astraka and 4 hours walk from Mikro Papigo.

There are various myths and legends about the Dragonlake of Tymfi, with the best known being the one who wants to live there, a dragon who tried to exterminate the dragon that lived in the Dragonlake of Smolikas. From the stones that flew at each other, the banks were formed. The bank of Tymfi is black with scattered white stones while Smolikas is white with scattered black stones. While there is an interpretation of the myth that says that, from the stones thrown by the Dragon of Tymfi were created the white rams and from the trunks thrown by the dragon of Smolikas were created the black sheep.

Another legend says that the Dragonlake of Tymfi had no bottom and that a great treasure was hidden there, but in reality, the depth is 3 to 5 meters depending on the prevailing conditions. There is a theory that during the Turkish occupation a Bey had put a diver from Preveza to dive to measure the depth of the lake and find the treasure. When he came out after an hour he was terrified and said not to try to do the same again.

Today Dragonlake of Tymfi is the ideal destination for those who love nature and have an appetite for walking while attracting photographers for impressive images.

Lake Doirani is located in the prefecture of Kilkis, 75 km north of Thessaloniki on the border of Greece and the former Yugoslavia. It has an area of 40 sq. Km, however, only 1/3 opens in our country.

The diversity of local vegetation and the abundance of fauna, combined with the elements of the modern history of the area, compose a special landscape. In the homonymous settlement of Doirani, next to the bank, one will see the abandoned wagons of the old railway station and the Cemetery of the British Soldiers on the hill behind the settlement of the First World War.

The huge grain crops and the wetlands around the lake are used as pastures while the area is characterized by intense livestock and agricultural activity since after the reduction of fish production the boats have been abandoned on the shores of the lake by fishermen.

The climate of Lake Doirani is Mediterranean with hot summers and wet winters. The lake is located on the border between two tectonic plates in an area with a particularly seismic area. Its depth is about 4 meters.

In the waters of the lake grow plants such as myrtle leaves and river neighbors and reeds that compose the aquatic vegetation of the wetland while in the lakeside forest we find the white willows or white poplars that create a magical landscape. The fauna around the lake is also impressive since the Greek part of the Lake has been included in the list of Special Protection Zones.

About 36 species of rare and protected birds use the area to nest, a park during migration, overwinter, or search for food, including the world-endangered Pelican and Lagoon. Some of the seabirds that we will meet in the Lake are the diphtheria, the kryptotsnikias, the baltokirkos, the diplosaino, the chalkokata, the bekatsini, the avoceta, the “lord of the swamps” etc.

Improper exploitation of the lake has led to the extinction of many species of fish that lived in the lake. In the past, there were 18 species of fish, mainly the carp, the goulianos, the platitsa and the perch which, together with the pike, the red-winged, the glin and the circus, abounded in its waters and were tradable. Other species were the eel, the tilinari, the piglet, the murmuritsa, the virgina, the butterfly, the mosquito fish, the gold needle, the ferro needle, the gypsy fish, etc.

In the Forest of Mulberry, which is located north of the settlement of Doirani and has been designated a Preserved Monument of Nature, with the nickname “Thousand Trees“, many mammals find shelter, such as weasels, foxes, badgers, ferrets and hares. Amphibians such as the bald eagle and the crested newt are some that can be found.

During your stay at Lake Doirani do not forget to eat at the local fish taverns but also to visit the old border railway station Doirani, which has been renovated and operates as a bar.

The gorge of Asopos, is a place of unique beauty, as it offers impressive images to visitors and is often a destination for professionals in the field of photography, in order to immortalize the instant beauty offered by the landscape, depending on weather conditions and light. You are located in Fthiotida, about 200 km away from Athens, and is an ideal destination for an escape from the city

The gorge of Asopos is a narrow passage between the mountain slopes of Oiti and Kallidromo and leads the waters of Eastern Oiti to the river Sperchios and through it to the Gulf of Maliakos. Thus, along the gorge, a wetland has been created, of great ecological importance, while the trees such as willows, plane trees, holly trees, and the low vegetation that you can see, fill the landscape with color and make it enchanting

The most famous route followed by hikers starts from the large and imposing railway bridge of Papadia and ends at the bridge of Asopos, where it is located at the end of the gorge. On this route, you are accompanied by the waters of the Asopos river. The Railway Trail was created at the end of the 19th century when the railway line Kato Tithoreas-Lianokladi was built. The railway lines offer images of infinite beauty. In this part, the greatness of nature competes in beauty with human intervention

At Kouvelos, an impressive rock-mountain, which dominates the gorge of Asopos, one can see the archaeological site of the Castle of Oria, where the remains of the ancient city and the wall that probably belong to Ancient Trachina are preserved. On the outskirts of Oiti and Kallidromo was ancient Heraklion, one of the five cities of the kingdom of Achille

The gorge of Asopos is a popular destination all year round but mainly in Autumn and is usually a meeting place for hiking clubs and nature lovers.

Lake Tsivlou in Achaia is one of the few mountain lakes in the Peloponnese and is created by a landslide that occurred in 1913. The result of this landslide was the disappearance of the village of Sylvaina, which had been abandoned in time, while tons of soil and rocks crushed the village of Tsivlos, from which it took its name, while they blocked the bed of the river Krathi and formed the lake. The waters of the lake are fed by three streams that descend from the forests and from at least two springs that exist beneath the surface.

Lake Tsivlou is located in the Municipality of Aegialia, on the slopes of Helmos and at an altitude of about 700 meters, just two hours away from Athens. Its depth is about 80 meters but this varies depending on the weather conditions prevailing per season. It is a destination for all seasons since the landscape is magnificent. Tsivlou lake is surrounded by forests of black pines, firs, and aleppo pines, but also mountains, which make the lake look like a blue meadow.

The fauna of the lake is rich in freshwater mullet trapped by the Krathi River but also in carp mosquito fish, trout, and crayfish placed there by the inhabitants of the surrounding villages without conducting any study. Due to its young age – not even 100 years old – that makes it one of the youngest lakes in Europe, the flora has not developed much, except for some reeds but also a peculiar hydrophyte that prevails in its seabed.

The inhabitants of the village of Sylvaina, which was lost at the bottom of the lake, created a village of the same name near Akrata. If you look at the Lake from above you can easily understand the location of the village that was lost. On the internet one can find testimonies of creepy residents from the moment of the landslide and destruction while the deafening noise caused, looked like a bombing.

Nowadays, the lake is an ideal place for walking and relaxing and is a place to visit if you find yourself in Achaia
